Wise Men of Gotham is the early name given to the people of the village of Gotham, Nottinghamshire, who are known for being foolish. Stories of foolish people are told in almost every country. In Germany there are the Schildburger, from the town of Schilda, and in the backcountry south of Warsaw, Poland, there are Chelmites, who come from a Brand: Qiliang Feng. How the Wise Men got to Chelm digs into Chelm’s past to find a more than five-hundred-year-old tradition of Chelm literature, situating its origins within a larger German genre of folly literature. The method employed throughout this book is one of comparison.

It is pretty interesting to see, which books other europeans read. That really seems to differ between countries. Here is the german perspective. The annals of Schilda are recounted by Jeremiah Fullstop, its last town clerk. Once the men of Schilda had been renowned for their wisdom. They were hired as court advisers far and wide. Their absence brought their own town to the edge of rack and ruin.

Book Description: How the Wise Men Got to Chelmis the first in-depth study of Chelm literature and its relationship to its literary precursors. When God created the world, so it is said, he sent out an angel with a bag of foolish souls with instructions to distribute them equally all over the world-one fool per town.

The actual journey of these wise men could easily have taken a long time. It would appear from Matthew that the star, which the wise men had seen, had appeared at the moment of Jesus’ birth. But the wise men had arrived after the birth. If they saw the star at the moment of Jesus’ birth, then it would have taken at least a few months.

In fact, the wise men came days, months, or possibly even years later. That is why Matthew says the wise men visited and worshiped Jesus in a house, not at the stable.

We know that the magi were wise men from "the East," most likely Persia, or modern-day Iran. This means the wise men traveled to miles to see the Christ child. The "wise men" of Chelm and their foolish acts are featured in many Yiddish folktales, giving the city a reputation similar to the one enjoyed (or suffered) by the towns and regions of Mols in Denmark, Schilda in Germany, Gotham in England, and Biella in Italy, to mention but a few examples.

In East European Jewish folklore, the city of Chelm (Pol., Chełm; Yid., Khelem) functions as an imaginary city of fools, similar to that of the Greek Abdera, the English Gotham, and the German Schilda, among numerous legendary “town of fools,” often presented ironically as “The Wise Men of,” is a feature common to most European folklores.

This book is Volume II of the series of readers of Million-Word Reading Project (MWRP). It is suitable for readers with a basic vocabulary of 1, words. This book tells stories about foolish people of the village of Gotham in England, the Schildburger, from the German town of Schilda, the Chelmites, from a small Jewish village in Poland named Chelm and stories of other foolish people.
